Jacobsen was responsible for all structural concrete for the Jon M. Huntsman Special Events Center expansion at the University of Utah. The 15,000-seat unobstructed-view sports and special events arena is constructed of exposed architectural concrete with a Triax dome. The 364-foot dome was, at the time of construction, the largest clear span wood dome in the world. A 98-foot diameter, 120-ton steel “cloud” is suspended from the center of the dome, supporting the interior arena lighting, sound system, score board and a small elevator. The complex consists of the Huntsman Center, five gymnasiums, the Natatorium and a tunnel connecting the structures.
