Jacobsen named Contractor of the Year by Utah CCIM

SALT LAKE CITY — Jacobsen has been named Contractor of the Year by the Utah CCIM Chapter, a highly respected association of commercial real estate professionals in the state.

The award was based upon several areas of achievement such as fostering a company culture of innovation, contributions to the strength of Utah’s construction industry, community involvement, safety record and sustainability efforts. Jacobsen was selected from among three finalists as the overall winner at an awards celebration at the Grand America Hotel on May 14.

The award was a recognition of Jacobsen’s strong 2021, which was an important year for the company for several reasons:

  • New Headquarters | Jacobsen’s modern new headquarters was a significant milestone, marking the first time in the firm’s history in which employees can go to work each day in an office built by Jacobsen, for Jacobsen. The headquarters was also a tangible way for Jacobsen to empower its workforce by putting them in an environment designed to foster creativity, productivity, collaboration and business success.
  • New Top Leadership | In the culmination of years of methodical succession planning, many promotions to key positions were either announced or made effective in 2021. This included Gary Ellis assuming the role of Jacobsen CEO, Matt Radke becoming Chief Operating Officer and Dennis Cigana being named Jacobsen’s first-ever Chief Development Officer.
  • New Jacobsen Brand: Built For Life | Jacobsen’s 2021 brand refresh elevated the central importance of the life that happens in the structures the company builds and emphasizes capable, industrious, caring people as Jacobsen’s best asset. Jacobsen’s updated look and logo provide a modern, invigorated perspective on the company’s long history and proud legacy.
  • Transformative Projects | Jacobsen finished several impactful projects in Utah in 2021, including the Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center; the DSU Science, Engineering & Technology Building; the Cytiva A30 Warehouse Cleanroom; and the Architectural Nexus Office Remodel.

“This award is such a tribute to our 650 employee-owners who demonstrate so much commitment to their work every day,” said Jacobsen’s Chief Financial Officer Tommy Auger in a speech accepting the award. “We’re also very grateful for the many relationships we have with owners, trade partners, architects and so many individuals who help us to be successful. I think this year’s CCIM Awards theme of Ascending To New Heights is so appropriate looking into 2022 and into the future. The future is so bright for all of us in the commercial construction and development industries as we individually and collectively look to create some amazing things throughout the state of Utah.”

CCIM Utah also selected the Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center in Taylorsville, a Jacobsen project, as one of three finalists for Project of the Year. The venue is a significant cultural asset that was commissioned by Salt Lake County with the goal of better serving the growing community of performing artists in the area and their expectant audiences. It includes a 440-seat proscenium theater, 250-seat studio theater and a large rehearsal space, as well as important theater amenities such as ticketing, concessions, dressing and wardrobe rooms, off stage restrooms, green rooms, scene prep, costumes, and lighting/sound equipment storage.

Additionally, Jacobsen client Cowboy Partners was honored with the Multi-Family Development of the Year award for Liberty Sky, in recognition of their firm’s smart strategic long-term vision and planning that led to the construction of Salt Lake City’s first high-rise apartment community. With ready access to locals’ favorite dining and entertainment establishments, the high-rise is comprised of 22 floors, five parking decks and 278 new apartments in the heart of downtown, and includes amenities such as a pool, a theater, office spaces, a club room, a mail room and a pet center.
