SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — For the second year in a row, Engineering News-Record (ENR) has named a Jacobsen Construction renovation in Arizona as the Best Small Project under $10 million in the Southwest region.
This year, it’s the HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center ICU Renovation that is being honored with the distinguished award. Completed in November 2024, this project was an extensive overhaul of an active hospital unit responsible for the care of patients in critical condition. The success of the renovation relied on numerous safety precautions and constant communication between construction team members, medical providers and facilities management leaders.
The project scope included demolition of several existing spaces; structural upgrades to support the installation of upgraded patient care tech; and the installation of new wall coverings, flooring, millwork, plumbing fixtures, lighting, ceilings and doors. Mechanical, plumbing, electrical, life-safety, nurse call, security and telecommunications systems were also all upgraded. All 25 patient ICU suites were renovated over the course of six phases, and the layout of the central staff support area of the unit, including nurse stations, was reconfigured to enhance workflow.
To determine this year’s awardees in the Southwest region, a panel of judges with expertise in the A/E/C industry scored projects throughout Arizona and New Mexico on the criteria of innovation, contributions to the construction industry and the community, the aesthetics and functionality of the design, quality craftsmanship, examples of teamwork and overcoming challenges, and safety record.
In 2024, Jacobsen’s renovation and expansion of the HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center Emergency Department similarly won ENR’s Best Small Project award in the Southwest region.
ENR will officially honor the HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center ICU Renovation project team at an awards celebration to be held Nov. 13 at the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel.
