SALT LAKE CITY — Two Jacobsen Construction Company projects have been honored with Excellence in Safety awards by ENR in the Mountain States region.
ENR awarded Best Project, Excellence in Safety to the project team that built the new Jacobsen Construction Company Warehouse in Magna, Utah and an Award of Merit, Excellence in Safety was announced for the American Heritage School Auxiliary Gym, Commons Building & Plaza project team in American Fork, Utah.
The two award-wining project teams combined to safely perform tens of thousands of worker hours without any OSHA-recordable incidents. Project leaders attributed this success to each subcontractor’s commitment to establishing a thriving safety culture on the jobsite, and the personal buy-in of each professional builder. High expectations were set early on with required project-specific safety trainings for all workers that discussed anticipated risks and mitigation strategies. Both project teams also emphasized a continual dialogue about safety, including regular safety meetings, rigorous task planning and recognizing colleagues for outstanding safety behaviors.
Descriptions of the winning projects are listed below.
Jacobsen Construction Warehouse | Magna, Utah
With Jacobsen cutting the ribbon on its new headquarters in 2021, it was also time for the company to improve its warehouse with a new facility. The new warehouse is significantly larger, better equipped for organizational proficiency, and far better strategically planned than the company’s old facility. The project called for a 11,966 square-foot warehouse, 3,940 square-foot shop and 13,442 square feet of office space spread between two levels.
The warehouse structure sits on 3.76 acres with another 2.34 acres adjacent to the site that was set aside for additional laydown yard space. The warehouse space has two high bay overhead doors opposite of each other to allow large equipment to pull through the space. The shop area has two specially designed hazardous materials storage rooms. The office space consists of multiple training rooms, personal offices, cubicles, a break room and restrooms with shower facilities.
American Heritage School Auxiliary Gym, Commons Building & Plaza | American Fork, Utah
American Heritage School, a private school focused on U.S. history and government curriculum, has a proud tradition of providing outstanding academic offerings and setting up students for both career achievements and civic engagement. To keep up with rising numbers of students, American Heritage School commissioned this project in the Summer of 2020.
This project consisted of two-story addition to American Heritage School that connected into the existing school building, a new auxiliary gym, and a new concrete plaza/common area for students. The new addition provides administrative offices on the first level as well as classroom space. Level two of the addition provides seven classrooms, a creativity lab, and a space shuttle simulator room.
