Our kids are heading back to school with sharpened pencils and new backpacks. They’re filing into their classrooms, ready for a new year of learning and discovery.
But some of our children will make discoveries that they, nor their families, are ever prepared for.
Every single day 43 children — about two elementary classes — are diagnosed with cancer in the United States. Every day five children die from the disease. Higher math isn’t required to know that additional research to end childhood cancer is needed more than ever before.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month… which makes us especially grateful to be building the Primary Children’s and Families’ Research Center at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. When completed next spring it will be home to 300 new scientists devoted to researching hundreds of childhood and family cancers.
“I’m no different than any other grandparent,” explains Jacobsen COO John Fortuna. “I want my grandchildren to grow up healthy and free from the heartache of disease. It’s an honor to help our friends at Huntsman Cancer Institute build a world-class research facility dedicated to fighting and ending childhood cancer. Nothing feels better than building hope!”
Throughout the month of September there will be many ways to raise awareness and make a difference. Our favorite is from Kneaders Bakery & Café… which features sugar, blue icing and the genetic superiority of elephants (making it clinically fascinating and delicious). Whether it’s a cookie, a 5K or a simple donation to the Huntsman Cancer Institute, we hope you will join us in the fight against childhood cancer.
