PHOENIX — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Phoenix Outpatient Clinic has been named Best Health Care Project in the Engineering News-Record (ENR) Southwest region.

The clinic was also announced as the recipient of an Excellence in Sustainability Award of Merit by ENR Southwest, which encompasses Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico.

The Veterans Affairs (VA) Phoenix Outpatient Clinic is a comprehensive facility offering patients primary care, mental health treatment, radiology services, OB-GYN care, pharmacy services and more. Staff work in an open office configuration to enhance collaboration and communication in support of the VA’s Patient-Aligned Care Teams (PACT) team-based care initiative. The building stands five stories tall, and at 280,000 square feet it is one of the largest VA facilities ever built. It is also expected to host more than 500,000 patient visits per year in 460 exam and consult rooms, filling a large need for Arizona veterans.

“This project was a special opportunity to create a place where our community’s brave veterans can receive world-class care,” said Jacobsen Project Director Greg Albertson, who oversaw construction of the clinic. “We could not be more happy to know that the result of this project will lead to shorter travel distances and wait times for veterans, and will give them better access to the latest advancements in health care. Serving those who have so selflessly served us was an honor.”

The solar array energy collection system that was installed for this project is a signal of the ambitious sustainability goals laid out in current and future Veterans Affairs projects. Large solar tubing on the roof of the clinic introduces solar-heated water into the process plumbing system for an environmentally friendly building that meets the Two Green Globes sustainability certification.

General contractor Jacobsen Construction Company teamed up with architecture firm Hoefer Welker to design and build the clinic on behalf of project owner U.S. Federal Properties Company, which in turn is leasing the building to the VA as the end user. Jacobsen and Hoefer Welker also worked together for the same owner/client team on the recently completed VA San Antonio Outpatient Clinic, which was likewise recently named Best Health Care Project in the ENR Texas & Louisiana region.
