Let us be clear: “Gold diggers” means something completely different to us.

On June 16, 17 mini-excavators featuring gold buckets turned the dirt and kicked off the $430 million expansion and replacement of Utah Valley Regional Medical Center (UVRMC). JCC joined Provo City and Intermountain Healthcare leaders to celebrate a massive endeavor which, when completed, will serve the growing community’s needs for decades to come.

“I almost think the physical facility will now be equal to the quality of medicine that’s already practiced here,” said Dr. Steven Bigler, Chief Medical Officer for Intermountain Healthcare’s South Region. “We’ll be able to do many, many things that we just don’t have the physical capabilities and support to do now.”

The complex project’s scope includes replacing the existing seven-story inpatient center with a new 12-story, 590,000-square-foot tower. The new facility will make it easier for UVRMC to align services that are currently scattered throughout the hospital. The massive campus will also feature a nine-story building for physician clinics, a healing garden, pond and waterfall.

UVRMC CEO Steve Smoot described the project as a transformative one for Utah County.

“As the community has grown and the need for more advanced, high-quality healthcare has increased, we have responded by designing a campus that will not only allow for leading-edge care today, but allows for the same level of care for decades to come,” said Smoot.

“It is always such a thrill to work with Intermountain Healthcare,” said JCC Project Executive Matt Radke. “From the Eccles Outpatient Services Building at Primary Children’s Hospital to Riverton Hospital to UVRMC, I consider it a privilege to work with an organization so vested in its mission: Providing the highest-quality patient care.”

Following the groundbreaking, we jumped right in with UVRMC on our first order of business: Coordinating and relocating the hospital’s 22-ton hyperbaric chamber to a new, temporary location, where it will remain for about three years while we construct the chamber’s new home: A 107,000 square-foot outpatient services building.

The UVRMC replacement/expansion is scheduled to be completed in late 2018.
